Bill proposes allowing wine deliveries to consumers’ homes

AUGUSTA, Maine –For the fourth time in as many years, Maine lawmakers will take up the question of whether to allow consumers to have wine shipped to their homes.

The measure is being spearheaded by Sen. Lynn Bromley of South Portland, who believes it’s time that Maine joined more than 30 other states that allow people of legal drinking age to have wine delivered to their doorsteps.

State police oppose the bill, saying it would be difficult to enforce and might boost underage drinking.

Bromley says that fear is being addressed by having those who wish to receive wine at home register with the state. The wine would have to carry a conspicuous label and someone older than 21 would have to be home to accept delivery.

Supporters and opponents will get a chance to express their views on Monday when the bill is heard by the Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee.
